In addition to mortalkind, Cardea is inhabited by beings of immense power: The Gods. The Gods either came into being with the world, or very rarely a mortal displaying exceptional power has elevated themselves to deity status.

Most of the Deities are far too occupied with their own contemplations to bother taking notice of mortalkind, but a few recognise the potential of a healthy following of mortals to try and further their own ends. This often inevitably places mortals either in direct opposition to a deity or indirect opposition to a deity by opposing that deities followers. There are two approaches to this potentially fatal situation. To avoid anything to do with the gods as best one can and hope that one is never unknowingly in contention with any of a deities followers, or to seek out a divine patron of ones own to protect one from possible divine wrath.

To entice mortals, The Gods have been known to lavish great power upon their followers. Those rising high with the favour of a god are sometimes granted near godlike powers, drawing the energy from the essence of the divine being concerned.
